Modica – road closure

The mayor of Modica has decided to shut a 100m stretch of the Corso every day of the week – from Monday to Thursday from 2000 to 2300, Friday and Saturday – 2000 to 2400 and Sunday 1800 to 2400, till the end of September.
The signage is appalling, they seem to think that a piece of A4 stuck on a lamppost 2km from the site is adequate. There are no alternatives routes signed. The information given – Piazza Monumento and Largo San Pietro dont even exist on Google maps. All there is are a few signs saying you mustn’t park.
To avoid being caught out and left on the wrong side of the road closure – park on hte side of Modica you want to leave from – the top of Corso Umberto if you want to go Ragusa, or the bottom if you’re going onto Scicli, Ispica, etc.
If you fail – here is a map showing the alternative routes. The blue arrows show the one way system.

Best Icecream

download

The best icecream in Sicily is officially Modican. Rosario Fiore of Fiore on Corso Umberto and in Marina di MOdica won the competition producing his Cookies Barocco icecream – which has Bonaiuto chocolate, orange, cinnamon, ginger and grated orange rind to finish off. Very Christmassy – Well worth a try.

Modica Tour bus

Its the end of the season and there is absolutely no publicity, but there is a new tour bus for Modica. Its run by SAIS and runs 12 courses daily between 10 am and 9pm from Modica Bassa – at the war memorial – up Corso Umberto, San Giorgio, the castle, Piazza Santa Teresa, Santa Maria Gesu, San Giovanni and down again to Modica Bassa. It has commentary in 5 languages and is hop on/hop off – so actually makes a trip up to Modica Alta a pleasure. It costs 5 euroos and your ticket is valid the whole day.

trenini

treni

Modica has now two tourist trenini. They have different routes but cost the same.
The green ‘Harrods’ train – trenino Barocco, does Modica Bassa up to Modica Alta and takes around 45 minutes for a tour of the main sites in town.
The red, yellow and black train, annoying called City by See, does the route up to the panoramic road above Modica Bassa, (not the Belevdere at modica alta) – This takes about 20 mins, and there is really only one stop – but it promises to be hop on hop off bus, so in theory you can get off and wait 1 hour for the next one.

Here are the routes: they both cost 5 euros per person (children free or reduced)

train

From Saturday 28th July until Xmas, the ‘flavour train’ will be running between Siracusa and Modica with stops in Noto. It’s also called the train of the sweetness of almonds and honey, and other products – which isnt quite as catchy if you ask me.

However the train will leave Siracusa at 9am reach Noto at 9.30 and arrive at MOdica at 1300. At each stop there will be free guided tours and tastings.

The other catchily named train of religious breads, feasts of the sea and desserts from convents will run between Agrigento and Porto Empedolce

Also dont miss a Sunday trip out from Catania centrale at 9am which goes to Dittaino, on the romantically tagged Train of the Devotional Sweets’ which then links up with a bus to go to Morgantina and the Villa Romana at Piazza Armerina. Return time is 1825 with arrival at Catania of 1935. It will be on 29 July, 19 August and 16 September.
