Finally we have an opening date – 30 May 2013, or possibly 27 June 2013. Unfortunately there are no shceduled flights, or companies who have signed on the dotted line, so it looks like it will be an airport to use if Etna throws up too much ash and Catania closes. At least for the initial period. let’s hope that some serious low cost airlines are jockeying for position. The region Sicilia has voted to fund the airport, and at the same time has voted to abolish the 9 Sicilian provinces thereby saving 700 million euros per year. The comunes will be able to act together (in much the same way as a province) to provide services, but without the managerial and bureaucratic overheads….. theoretically.
